The New York City Housing Authority is facing significant financial burdens while its public image has been tarnished by issues of mismanagement and a hatred of public housing nationwide. This book is a study of how politics and public opinion conspired to turn NYCHA from a successful model into a failing housing authority.

At the same time, the study is a call for  reinvestment in New York’s public housing and a rethinking of urban housing policies. A new framework for public housing is proposed, explored through two case studies.

Then

An in-depth analysis of public housing developments over the 20th century including detailed study of several projects and tracking of significant political events.  Charting and visualizing the history of NYCHA, separate from the stigma surrounding it today.

& Now

Looking to NYCHA’s future and proposing a new model of community-based developent. Following a set of principles and alternative mechanism, two case studies look at NYCHA developments in the East Harlem and Brownsville neighborhoods to demonstrate potential plans.
