After grad school I moved to Northern California for four years, earning my licensure as an Architect in the State of California. I am passionate about the connection between architecture and the act of making and have had the opportunity to work on numerous design/build projects. My past research has also included deep dives into affordable housing policy at the local, state, and national levels. The development seeks to connect to the surrounding area and Santa Fe at-large and promote resilient communities through paying homage to the vernacular Pueblos, connecting residents through communal spaces, passive environmental systems, and a lease to limited equity co-operative model. Santa Fe, NM At the periphery of the city, the area’s development pattern is based on previous agricultural properties requiring access to the Santa Fe River, resulting in long North/South Axes, with few connections in between. While the site is in close proximity to a large commercial area with many resources for residents, the underlying urban pattern creates barriers preventing easy access. Taking cues from the “kivas” of Pueblo architecture, ceremonial community rooms and platforms located in Pueblo courtyards, the buildings step down to their courtyards with terraces for each unit that overlook these nested community spaces. Each courtyard is programmed for a different use including outdoor activities and a community farm. Within the development, we have provided space for a food market, and on-site nurse, daycare, a gym, and additional commercial tenants. Generous lobbies and covered parking spaces are intended to act as extensions of the community realm for residents including as flex spaces for alternative uses outside individual units. <img using passive systems to minimize its impact on the landscape and reduce reliance on utilities. Stormwater is captured and infiltrated on-site through a swale, and all apartments feature two exposures for effective cross-ventilation. The project strives to strengthen an arts network within the neighborhood, encouraging community building by making a home for numerous existing programs. Standardized metal warehouse structures are used to support the existing masonry facades, allowing for open interiors which can be filled and adapted as needed. Lerma’s Nite Club Opened in 1951, Lerma’s was a famous music club and longstanding venue for Conjunto music, a Tejano style known for its use of the accordion and lively dance style. The club was closed after its circa 1948 building was deemed dangerous by the City of San Antonio and threatened with demolition. It took continued advocacy from community groups like the Esperanza Center to save the building and initiate its ongoing restoration. The site is located in the Westside, a historic Tejano neighborhood in San Antonio. Tectonics The buildings are designed as two systems: a “heavy” system of the existing masonry facades and new concrete facade, and a “light” system utilizing modular metal warehouse tectonics as the conditioned space. The warehouse building system acts to support the existing structurally degraded masonry walls while floor space which is completely free of additional supports. Burnell The Paperclip Chair is a prototype inspired by the furniture of Hans Wegner, specifically his famous Flag Halyard Chair. The design takes notes from the contrast between the sleek steel frame and the warmth of the woven seat. The Paperclip Chair features danish cord on a looping steel frame to create a comfortable lounge chair. How we create a home for ourselves changes across a lifetime and even in our daily routines. Currently, we conceptualize our homes around spaces - bedroom, living room, kitchen. This project attempts to conceptualize the home in time and seeks a form which addresses the mutable nature of dwelling. Interchangeable model parts are used to investigate the home at a series of scales including objects, furniture, and partitions. Santa Maria la Ribera, CDMX The historic neighborhood of Santa Maria la Ribera has undergone significant change over the past century. Originally a planned community of single family row-homes, it has increasingly been the site of new multi-family construction and gentrification. Within the neighborhood, there remains a private street of single family homes known as Loto. Research was a collaborative process and the studio worked to produce a large common model on which to display our work. framework to design spaces within a home not based on a specific use but based on timescales. These included homescapes at the scale of one minute, one hour, one day, one night, one week, one month, one season, one year, and one decade. The project studied air-rights both in their current use and the systems by which they are applied. These systems were reconsidered to produce a method of moving forward which might benefit the residents of East Harlem through community amenities and affordable housing. While the conclusions may appear absurd, they are grounded in existing mechanisms.
